programs have four inter-related and integrated activity components: wilderness expedition; challenge activities; individual, group and family counseling; and school.
A dedicated multi-disciplinary team of Instructors, Masters-level therapists and teachers support a consistent focus on helping the student achieve his personal change goals for his behaviour, mental health, physical fitness, and academic achievement.
Wendigo Lake utilizes a holistic approach to programming which maximizes therapeutic impact by immersion in a world where each interaction, from the time the student awakens until he goes to sleep, is a ‘teachable moment’ and an opportunity to practice skills in anger management, communication, problem solving, and respect.
When compared with traditional residential treatment models, our adventure based experiential approach to therapy works to provide achievable opportunities for growth and success. Students in the program live in an intensive community environment designed to assist in developing practical emotional coping skills and problem solving strategies, and to assist in teaching students to develop positive peer/adult relationships. These new skills and the experience of successfully overcoming real challenges lead students to become more resilient and can assist in successful reintegration into their family and community while serving to empower students to lead a more pro-social and successful life. |
